Orphans and Widows James 1:27 in Action We live in a broken world. The devastating effects of war, poverty, and disease have created a worldwide tragedy. 10 million orphans under the age of 15 are now struggling for survival with both parents dead. 108 million children have lost a mother or a father. Reports indicate that there are more than 20 million AIDS orphans, the fastest growing orphan population. Life for these parentless children is desperate.  They are forced to beg for food.  They are often the victims of sexual predators and violent assaults because there are no adults left to care for them. Many of them end up living on the streets or urban garbage dumps trying to find food to eat or trash to sell. God tells us He has a special concern for orphans. He is the "Father to the fatherless," and He expects His Church to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. James 1:27 speaks to us boldly, stating that "pure and undefiled religion is to care for orphans and widows in their distress." We see so many orphan-related causes and facts, but what about the widows? In so many parts of the world, especially regions in which we work, widows are ostracised members of the community. Superstition labels them as "cursed" or "shameful." On top of the deep, profound pain of losing her husband, a widow is abandoned and left to suffer alone. Our hearts break for these women. Seeing the need to rebuild the dignity of these women and surround them with love, care, and provision, we've included them as a core element of our Church Orphan Homes. Widows are the principal caregivers in each home, alongside the pastor and his family. Caring for the children gives them purpose and helps to heal their broken hearts.  They've felt the deep pain of loss and can offer the empathy and understanding love that the kids so desperately need.
