Devastation (Sep. 2001)
The
floods are rising again this year and may cause more devastation
than ever before.
Ted
Olbrich writes from Phnom Penh:
...I have some
disturbing developments to report. We are having
floods again, and several meteorologists are predicting they could
be worse than last year. This year they are different.
The
primary source of water is from the north. Rains in China, Laos
& Vietnam have swollen the rivers close to, or over, flood
stage. The worst of the
rains is ahead and we are already experiencing serious problems.
Several of the landing sites are already under water and, contrary
to last year we are already experiencing some floods in Phnom Penh.

Last
year, a flood emergency created a state of emergency for the orphans
in homes throughout Cambodia. The danger of rapidly spreading
disease through floodwater in rainy season is compounded with
difficulty to transport necessary supplies! Hundreds of Cambodians
died as flood victims and thousands were displaced. [More]
We must
now gear up and prepare for the imminent flood-caused suffering.
Saving our orphans from the disaster is top priority. We expect to
send relief in the very near future. To gather resources necessary
to rescue the orphans, Warm Blankets has set up a special "Emergency
Relief Fund." |
